October 22, 2026
The Hurricane Community Center sits at 63 S 100 W. It has a splash pad, a playground, a pavilion, picnic tables and restrooms on a block that fills up whenever the city throws a party. The Easter Car Show has used it. The Christmas Tree Lighting is held there. Starting Friday, October 30, the street along its south side is scheduled to become a construction site, and it is supposed to stay one until a few days before the 2027 car show.
That timing shapes this whole winter. Downtown keeps one big November night. Most of the month's other shared events happen out at Sand Hollow, where rangers run a calendar through the slow season.
In his October 13 "In the Loop" update, Mayor Fawcett wrote that the city had accepted the bid for the 100 South project and expected work to begin "within the next couple of weeks." The project covers two stretches:
The work includes new asphalt and new utility lines.
The October 15 City Council packet has the details. Six bids came in, ranging from $2,159,723.64 to $3,380,303.35. City staff recommended awarding the job to the low bidder, Advanced Construction and Design, LLC, known as ACAD. According to the packet, ACAD has already finished substantial work in town, including the Copper Rock development and the city's 1100 West widening. The meeting agenda listed the award for "consideration and possible approval." The packet's staff comments also explain the schedule:
"Their proposed schedule includes a start date of October 30, 2026, with substantial completion by March 24, 2027, in time for the Easter Car Show."
Here is the winter on the contractor's proposed schedule:
So the road is due to be done three days before the show, and the landscaping is due almost four weeks after it. If the schedule holds, the car show will be the first big gathering on a rebuilt 100 South.
The tree lighting falls about a month into construction. The city's event listing puts it on Monday, November 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Community Center & Splash Pad. The evening includes the tree lighting, donuts and hot cocoa, a live nativity, horse-drawn carriage rides and Santa.
The mayor's update warns about getting in. It says the work "will cause some temporary inconvenience, especially for those accessing the Community Center," and suggests using Main Street to reach the parking lot on the building's east side. That is the only access advice the city has published. No closure schedule or detour map has been released, so on November 30, coming in from Main Street to the east lot is the plan the city itself has given.
The Main Street end of the project is also close to the Hurricane Valley Heritage Park Pioneer Museum at 35 West State Street. The same east-side approach that serves the Community Center keeps you on the Main Street side of the work.
The tree lighting is downtown's one big date this month. Most of the rest of November's shared calendar is out at Sand Hollow State Park, where something is on almost every week. Utah State Parks' November 2026 calendar lists ranger programs at the park from the first week of the month through Thanksgiving week. One listing calls this stretch "our off-season," so the beach is quieter than it is in summer.
| Date | Program | Time | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed., Nov. 4 | Community Action, Weed Pulling | 4 to 5 p.m. | Pulling invasive plants that came up after monsoon season |
| Mon., Nov. 9 | Campfire Chat | 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. | A ranger-led evening around the fire, with s'mores from Lin's in Hurricane |

| Sat., Nov. 21 | EKO: Share Nature with a Friend | 2 to 3 p.m. | Every Kid Outdoors challenge with Utah's DOR; kids earn a sticker |
| Tue., Nov. 24 | Community Action, Trash Cleanup | 4 to 5 p.m. | Off-season beach cleanup with a ranger |
| Wed., Nov. 25 | Full Moon Stroll | 6 to 7:15 p.m. | A beach walk and full-moon talk |
A few listings give helpful details. For Campfire Chat, the park asks people to bring chairs and suggests bringing hot cocoa to go with the s'mores from Lin's. The Winged Wonders listing says more than 250 bird species visit the reservoir each year, and it suggests bringing a chair or blanket to the spot near the jetty. For Movie Meetup, the park recommends bringing blankets and chairs and arriving early to buy food from the vendors.
Several of the ranger programs land on weeknights, and the Full Moon Stroll falls the night before Thanksgiving. Downtown's November is one Monday evening at the end of the month.
Two community events this month are also well away from the work zone.
The Sand Hollow Charity Car Show runs Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Sand Hollow Resort, 5662 W. Clubhouse Drive. Sand Hollow Resort is the organizer. The Hurricane Valley Chamber of Commerce lists it on its November calendar. This fall car show comes almost five months before the downtown spring show, which needs the rebuilt road.
The Veterans Recognition Luncheon is Tuesday, November 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Washington County Legacy Park, 5500 W. 700 S. The Chamber organizes it. It is the day before Winged Wonders, so the luncheon and the morning birding program at the reservoir fall on back-to-back days.
These two dates and the ranger calendar together make up most of what's on the shared calendar for the month, and all of it is away from the block the city is digging up.
The Hurricane Valley Rotary Club runs the Easter Car Show as its annual fundraiser. The 2026 show was held Saturday, April 4. The club's site says the 2027 show "will be on March 27 in downtown Hurricane, Utah from 9am to 5pm," and that registration should open sometime in January. City listings in past years have placed the show at the Community Center.
That makes it the event the whole construction schedule is built around. When registration opens in January, the work should be about halfway through its proposed run, and the substantial completion target will be about ten weeks away. The landscaping and punch-list work runs on to April 23, so the rebuilt 100 South may still look unfinished at the edges on car show weekend, even if the pavement and new utility lines are done on time.
Until then, the city's suggestion stands. Come in from Main Street and park in the east-side lot to reach the Community Center.
